I never knew that Jane Austen wrote poetry, and seeing that I am to do a speech on her I figured this Friday ought to be devoted to her. I am watching my taped (actually “dvd-ed” but that isn’t a word) Miss Austen Regrets tonight and hope to finally finish The Annotated Pride and Prejudice. I have two reviews coming really soon- Peeled and Enthusiasm!
This little bag I hope will prove
To be not vainly made–
For, if you should a needle want
It will afford you aid.
And as we are about to part
T’will serve another end,
For when you look upon the Bag

Jane wrote doggerel rhymes, as did her mother. Her eldest brother, James was more ambitious and wrote in blank verse and sonnets as well. A bunch of them are available on the internet.
Says Kelly, who’s spent over a year doing research on Jane thus far. It’s funny, too, because some folks think Jane’s a bit stodgy, but she had a wicked sense of fun and enjoyed puns and wordplay, and so her doggerel is full of it. Even the one about her friend Martha Lloyd being in mourning is comical (Miss Lloyd is gone to Miss Green).
